How to Properly Implement Video in Your eLearning Repertoire

Video is such a valuable tool for learning and developing new skills. When you need help completing a task, would you rather read a list of instructions, or look up a brief tutorial that demonstrates the task in action? If you’re like most people, you’d likely rather save time and get right to the demonstration. Video is a very popular solution in eLearning for this exact reason. Here are some tips for successfully implementing video in your eLearning repertoire!

Keep it Brief (If Possible)

Video works best when it demonstrates small chunks of information. The longer your video, the more likely your trainees are to feel overloaded with content. Make it easier on them by keeping it brief and emphasizing only a few key points per video clip.

Emphasize Interactivity (If You Can’t Keep It Brief)

Some topics are too broad to cram into a brief, digestible video. If you’re having trouble keeping the video short, perhaps consider a series of brief videos that are tied together with some form of interactivity. Many businesses prefer to add quizzes to sequence their content better and keep trainees engaged throughout each section. You might also consider including brief summaries after each section to highlight critical content.

Provide Captions

Never assume that all of your trainees will have functioning speakers or headphones 100% of the time. Even if they do, some people prefer to follow along with captions anyway. If you don’t have the means to add captions to your training videos, you can always provide video transcripts for those who prefer to supplement video with text.

File Size Matters

If you are hosting your videos on your own site, be sure to pay attention to file size. Uncompressed video looks and sounds great, but there’s a good chance the slow loading speeds will hinder your trainees. Luckily, you can compress your videos while still maintaining plenty of quality. If you choose to host your videos on YouTube, you won’t have to worry about compression. Plus, you might be able to take advantage of YouTube specific features like playlists and annotation links.
