How to Keep Learners Motivated

Even keeping learners engaged in a standard in-person class can be challenging, but even more so with online courses. Since a virtual environment has an added challenge of a lack of social cues, if your learners are bored while taking your eLearning course, you may not be able to actively change your teaching methods on the fly to fix that. As such, your course should be designed from the ground up to keep learners engaged throughout. Here’s some tips to help you do so!

Limit Unneeded Narration

In the corporate world, it’s safe to assume that people can read quite fast. While you might think a narrator reading blocks of text may take a load off for your learners, there’s a good chance its actually slowing them down and causing them to unplug. If you do decide to implement a narrator, you are best off using it to provide general guidance or clear up confusing graphics that learners likely would waste time trying to interpret on their own.

Concise Title and Clear Objectives

Learners should never have to guess what your course is about. Use a very clear title and reveal your course objectives early. This way, they know exactly what they are supposed to be taking away from your course, and they can approach the course with the proper frame of mind.

Gamification

We’ve mentioned gamification in previous blogs, and that’s because it’s a very valuable concept in eLearning course design. Put simply, learners are much more likely to truly engross themselves in a topic when an element of fun is involved. Whether its challenges, score indicators, leaderboards or badges, your learners will appreciate a layer of fun tying your course together.

Spice Things Up with Peer Interaction

eLearning courses can start to feel quite monotonous without an element of social interaction. If your business is still fully or partially remote, an eLearning course with emphasis on social interaction may even be a breath of fresh air for your employees. Chat rooms and discussion boards are sure to keep your employees looking forward to advancing through your courses. Furthermore, these platforms can also be used to communicate feedback regarding their experience.
